The Lagos State Government, in collaboration with the Lagos Urban Development Initiative (LUDI) and other stakeholders, will observe the annual ‘Car-Free Day’ on Sunday, 22nd September 2024.
This initiative encourages road users and motorists to forego their cars for a day and embrace Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) options such as walking and cycling, according to a statement from the Ministry of Transportation.
Coinciding with a period of higher fuel prices, which has already reduced road traffic, the event aims to raise awareness about the benefits of NMT.
Around the world, Car-Free Day is marked every September 22, with countries promoting alternatives to car travel by closing streets or encouraging the use of public transportation.
Lagos State’s Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, emphasized the initiative’s focus on reducing environmental pollution and promoting physical activity.
The World Health Organization (WHO) cites physical inactivity as the fourth leading global risk factor for mortality, contributing to 6% of deaths worldwide. Increasing physical activity, the event organizers note, is key to improving public health.
The event also serves as an opportunity for cities and governments to strengthen public transport systems, offering better alternatives to private vehicles. It underscores the significance of prioritizing walking, cycling, and inclusive mobility.
Hundreds of participants are expected to gather at Ahmadu Bello Way for a day of activities including cycling, training sessions, competitions, skating, music, and dance.
This collaborative effort between the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation and other agencies aims to educate the public on the relationship between environmental health and individual well-being.
