Organizers of the October 1 nationwide protest against the worsening economic conditions in Nigeria have reaffirmed their commitment to proceed with the demonstration, despite warnings from the Federal Government and the Nigeria Police Force.
One of the key organizers, Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), confirmed the decision in a post on his X account on Monday, stating, “NO GOING BACK! #FearlessInOctober.”
In a shared interview, Sowore emphasized the motivations behind the protest, citing increased hardship across the country.
“Between the last protest on August 1, just two months ago, and now, petrol prices have risen by almost ₦300 per litre. The naira has further devalued, and prices have increased in the market. Floods are devastating our cities. Bandits have taken over and killed off entire communities,” Sowore explained.
He clarified that the protest would be peaceful and is scheduled to take place at Eagles Square in Abuja.
Organizers in Lagos have also planned to begin their march at 7:30 am at Ikeja Under Bridge.
