In an effort to counteract the nation’s growing insecurity, the Center for Peace and Environmental Justice (CEPEJ) has promoted the inclusion of traditional institutions in Nigeria’s security system.
During a news conference held in Abuja yesterday, Comrade Mulade Sheriff, the national coordinator of CEPEJ, stated that traditional rulers in Nigeria can have a significant impact on tackling security issues.
Sheriff emphasized the special role that traditional leaders play as defenders of culture and customs within their communities and added that because of their deep familiarity with the local landscape, they are ideal candidates to lead security efforts in conjunction with law enforcement.
“The engagement of traditional rulers in securing their respective territories is crucial to effectively curbing insecurity,” he stated.
According to him, giving traditional leaders the authority to protect people and property inside their borders would greatly reduce security risks.
Sheriff emphasized the necessity for traditional leaders to take an active role in preventing all types of violence, including political turmoil, and pointed out the widespread existence of criminal forces in local communities.
