INEC dismisses Chairman’s death rumors

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed reports claiming that its Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has passed away.

A statement released by Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, described the rumors as “fake news” and assured the public that Yakubu is alive and well.

The rumors, which began circulating on social media on December 9, 2024, claimed that Yakubu had died in a London hospital following a brief illness.

However, Oyekanmi emphasized that Yakubu has not traveled to London in the last two years and was present at recent meetings with the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters and Resident Electoral Commissioners.

The INEC Chairman urged the public to disregard the false reports and emphasized the importance of combating misinformation.
