In order to improve efficiency, the Inspector General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, has advised the Federal Government to merger the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) with the police.
Speaking at the House of Representatives dialogue organized on State Policing in Abuja, he urged those calling for state police to work towards merging the NCDSC and the FRSC with the police.
Egbetokun also said that Nigeria was not ripe enough for state police. He bemoaned the fact that the police are struggling with both shortage of man power and poor training.
He complained that police barracks across the country have fallen into a state disrepair, highlighting lack of upkeep and renovation as the reason.
The Police Supremo added that the state governors will use the state police to their advantage to suppress the opposition in their state.
Police need a lot of resources to fight against kidnapping, banditry, and terrorism as there is need to work on training personnel to improve internal security.
Gen. Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defense Staff, has called on a joint effort by all stakeholders, which, according to him, will enable Nigeria to create policies and plans that will strengthen the country’s security framework.
