A 23-year-old philosophy student at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ayomide Adeleye, has confessed to the gruesome murder of 18-year-old Christiana Idowu, a fellow church member.
According to a Vanguard report, Adeleye, now in custody at the Lagos State Police Command Tactical Unit in Ikeja, admitted that financial desperation drove him to commit the crime.
Adeleye revealed that he lured Idowu, an Industrial Training student at Yaba College of Technology, to his residence under the pretext of repairing her phone.
Once she arrived, he attacked her. “I just grabbed her, applied pressure, and squeezed her throat until she gave up,” he recounted.
After the murder, Adeleye buried Idowu’s body in a shallow grave behind his house. In a chilling turn, he contacted her mother, demanding a ransom, initially asking for ₦3 million but ultimately settling for ₦360,000.
He directed the funds to a SportyBet account, which police were able to trace through his National Identification Number (NIN), leading to his arrest.
“The first thing I said to her was, ‘Hello, madam. we have your daughter,’” he said.
Expressing remorse for his actions, Adeleye stated, “I regret that I killed her because my mum and her mum were friends.”
In a statement of regret, Adeleye expressed deep remorse for his actions and said, “I deserve death, honestly… I have been planning to kill myself.”
