Fuel Price Hike: NANS declares Nationwide Demonstrations

NANS

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a notification about a planned massive shutdown of major cities across Nigeria, set to begin on September 15, 2024.

This protest is a response to the recent hike in fuel prices and a call for the removal of Mele Kyari, the Director General of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), due to perceived incompetence.

The notice, signed by Okunomo Henry Adewumi, President of the Senate (NANS), expressed dissatisfaction with the hardship caused by the continuous increase in fuel prices. NANS demanded an immediate reversal of the fuel price hike and the dismissal of Kyari from his role as the NNPC DG.

The students’ union has called on Nigerian students nationwide to participate in the protest, assuring that the demonstrations will be peaceful and lawful. The notice emphasized that they will “occupy all major cities” on September 15, 2024, and urged authorities to take measures to maintain law and order during the protest.

The statement read:

“We can no longer stand idly by while our future is mortgaged by the actions of a few. We demand an immediate reversal of the fuel price hike and the removal of Mr. Kyari as the NNPC DG.”

The protest aims to highlight the struggles of the masses and the need for government accountability in addressing the economic challenges faced by Nigerians.
