Flooding: 281 inmates escape Borno prison

281 inmates have taken advantage of the current dam overflow to escape from the correctional center in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

However, 7 have been recaptured.

In a statement by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Umar Abubakar, it was revealed that officers, with support from other security agencies, successfully evacuated inmates to a secure location.

However, during the process, it was discovered that 281 inmates were unaccounted for.

He claimed the flooding, which occurred on Tuesday, breached the facility’s walls, leading to the escape of several inmates.

The Service has the details and biometrics of the escapees and has made this information available to the public. Pictures of the fleeing prisoners were also circulated.

He disclosed that both covert and overt operations have been activated in coordination with other security agencies to track them down.

He assured the public that the incident does not pose a threat to public safety and that the situation is being carefully managed.
