Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has announced a halt to the demolition of houses in six Local Government Areas of the state following ongoing protests by affected residents.
The LGAs involved include Ido, Akinyele, Egbeda, Ona-Ara, Lagelu, and Oluyole.
Makinde made this declaration on Monday while addressing protesters at the Government Secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan.
He clarified that there would be “no demolition of houses outside the 150 metres (75m right & left)” from designated areas.
Additionally, he assured the residents that any house built outside the 150-metre zone would be incorporated into the state’s urban planning.
The protests, which began three days earlier, intensified on Friday, with demonstrators blocking key roads, including Awolowo, Agodi Secretariat, and Queen Elizabeth Road, bringing traffic to a standstill.
Many of the protesters even observed their Friday Jumu’ah prayers on the road as part of their demonstration.
Protesters had vowed to continue their actions until Governor Makinde personally addressed their concerns, refusing to heed any other officials.
