A recent report by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) has revealed that popular Nigerian crossdresser Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, also known as Bobrisky, spent only three weeks in prison despite being sentenced to six months for Naira abuse.
On April 12, 2024, Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos had handed down the sentence, but Bobrisky was released on August 5.
Social media was abuzz when Martins Vincent Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), alleged in a video that Bobrisky claimed he spent most of his sentence in a private residence, aided by a powerful godfather.
Additionally, VDM claimed that Bobrisky paid N15 million to have the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) drop a money laundering charge against him.
The FIJ report supports these allegations, stating that after spending three weeks in Kirikiri prison, Bobrisky was moved to an undisclosed location where he reportedly completed his sentence.
A prison official confirmed that Bobrisky received special treatment during his brief stay in prison, describing him as being “guarded like a president” before being moved out. The official added that money played a role in the arrangement.
Days ago, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board suspended two officers from the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre in Lagos following allegations related to Bobrisky.
