Supporters of Aminu Bayero, the ousted Emir of Kano, took to the streets, earlier today, in protest across the five emirates.
These emirates are Bichi, Rano, Karaye, Kano, and Gaya.
Bayero was removed from his position on Thursday after Abba Yusuf, the Kano governor, approved a new law that overturned the Emirate Council Law 2019.
The 2019 law divided the Kano emirate into five areas and led to the removal of Muhammadu Sanusi in 2020.
Sanusi was reinstated as the 16th Emir of Kano on Thursday during a colorful ceremony at the government house. He has since moved into the palace.
Bayero returned to Kano early Saturday and moved into the palace in Nassarawa LG. Afterwards, the governor ordered his arrest.
Some of the protesters lit a bonfire on a main road while chanting anti-government songs.
Policemen and other security agents were present, but made no attempt to disperse the protesters.
After a special prayer session, the protesters began marching towards the palace, where Emir Sanusi is holding court.
However, Governor Yusuf has yet to respond to the protests. However, the government’s initial stance suggests that the dissolution is part of a broader strategy to centralize control and streamline the traditional leadership structure in Kano State.
The situation continues to unfold as the affected communities await further clarification and possible resolutions from the state authorities.
