Severe flooding in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State in northeastern Nigeria, has claimed at least 30 lives and displaced around 400,000 people, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The flooding, caused by an overflowing dam, swept away thousands of homes, affecting approximately 40% of the city.
Ezekiel Manzo, a NEMA spokesperson, confirmed the death toll, while another NEMA official, Zubaida Umar, described the situation as “frightening,” noting that the number of displaced individuals could potentially rise to one million.
The UN refugee agency, via its X account, referred to the flood as the worst the city has experienced in 30 years.
