16-year-old Isabel presides over Reps plenary

The House of Representatives marked the International Day of the Girl Child in a significant way by allowing 16-year-old Isabel Anani, a gender advocate, to preside over a special session.

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas vacated his seat for Anani in a ceremony organized by Plan International Nigeria, highlighting the importance of girls’ education and empowerment.

Anani, introduced as the “Speaker for the Day,” led the session, during which a motion was presented commemorating the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child.

The motion, raised by Kafilat Ogbara, emphasized the need to invest in girls’ education and wellbeing.

In her role, Anani advocated for a future where girls are given equal opportunities in education, healthcare, and politics, and are protected from violence and harmful practices.

The House adopted the motion and urged for collaboration between agencies and schools to combat drug abuse and promote education, especially for out-of-school girls.

They also called for amendments to the Child’s Rights Act to protect abused children and the swift passage of bills that safeguard women and girls’ rights.
