General Functions:
As participants in the PhD Internship Program, students are expected to advance their doctoral thesis during their tenure at the WTO, utilizing access to WTO facilities, information, and engagement with the trade policy community.
Assignments on behalf of the WTO Secretariat are not required of participants.
Each student is assigned a mentor for the duration of their internship, offering guidance and support in collaboration with the student’s academic supervisors.
Before concluding the program, participants are required to deliver a seminar on their research work.
Duration:
Internships typically last from three to six months.
Eligibility:
- Candidates must be nationals of WTO member states, countries engaged in accession negotiations or customs territories.
- Applicants must be from least-developed countries (LDCs) or developing countries.
- PhD students or equivalents in economics, law, international relations, or related fields relevant to the WTO are eligible.
- Applicants should be in the final stage of their PhD studies, at least 75% complete with their thesis.
- Proficiency in one of the WTO’s official languages (English, French, or Spanish) is required.
Remuneration and Benefits:
Interns receive a daily allowance of CHF 60, inclusive of weekends and official holidays.
Travel expenses (economy class air fare) to and from Geneva are covered by the WTO.
Interns are responsible for arranging mandatory medical health insurance coverage in Switzerland before commencing their internship.
