Welcome to the University of Pretoria’s esteemed Master’s Degree (LLM/MPhil) program in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA)! This intensive one-year course is a unique opportunity for 25-30 exceptional individuals to immerse themselves in a comprehensive curriculum that spans six months in Pretoria and six months at one of our 12 partner universities across Africa. It is led by distinguished lecturers in human rights, and participants engage in practical training exercises, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to become experts in the realm of human rights and democracy.
Upon completion, graduates join the esteemed HRDA Alumni Association, which boasts 663 active members engaged in a diverse array of human rights work. From grassroots initiatives to civil service roles to prestigious positions in international organizations like the African Union and the United Nations, their alumni make a tangible impact across the continent.

Key Objectives
- Train human rights experts equipped to serve in government ministries, international bodies, and regional organizations, enhancing their effectiveness through professionalism and operational competence.
- Foster collaboration among African universities to establish a network of legal professionals and academics specializing in human rights and democracy, facilitating research and teaching tailored to Africa’s unique needs.
- Forge connections between the African Masters program and other regional initiatives, promoting cross-regional dialogue and cooperation in advancing human rights and democracy.
Scholarships
A limited number of up to 30 students are selected annually, with full scholarships covering tuition, accommodation, and official program activities available for up to 25 African citizens. Self-funding or partially self-funding options are also available for students who do not receive scholarships.
Requirements
- Law Students (LLM Option): Must possess a degree enabling access to the legal profession (e.g., LLB or equivalent).
- Non-law students (MPhil Option): must hold at least an honors degree in a relevant discipline related to human rights and democratization.
