Call for Papers: 2024 WTO Essay Award for Young Economists

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is pleased to announce its call for young economists to submit papers for the prestigious 2024 WTO Essay Award. This initiative aims to foster high-quality research in the fields of trade policy and international trade cooperation, while also strengthening the relationship between the WTO and the academic community.

Benefits:

The annual WTO Essay Award offers a prize of CHF 5,000 to the author(s) of the winning essay. In the case of a co-authored paper, the prize will be equally divided among the authors.

The winning paper will be officially unveiled at the annual meeting of the European Trade Study Group (ETSG), the premier conference specializing in international trade.

The winning author will receive financial support to attend the meeting.

The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on 12-14 September 2024 at Athens University in Greece.

Selection Process:

An Academic Selection Panel, including Professor Ralph Ossa (Director, Economic Research and Statistics Division, WTO Secretariat) an ex officio member, is responsible for selecting the winning paper.

Dr. Roberta Piermartini (Chief, Trade Cost Analysis Section, WTO) oversees the panel’s activities.

The essay

The CV of the author(s), detailing (i) current affiliation(s), (ii) the academic institution awarding the PhD, (iii) the year (or expected year) of the PhD, (iv) the date of birth of the author(s).

Application Deadline: Essays must be submitted by 3 June 2024. The Economic Research and Statistics Division of the WTO Secretariat will shortlist eligible papers by 17 June 2024, and the selection panel will make the final decision by 8 July 2024. Only authors of short-listed essays will receive notifications.
