The Nigerian Senate has urged the Federal Government to allow the National Health Insurance Scheme to take in Nigerians with Severe Kidney Disease.
The Senate appealed to stakeholders to launch a huge public outreach campaign to control this disease as it’s becoming alarming. Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, APC, Katsina Central, who sponsored the motion to mark ‘World Kidney Day’ stated that the recent statistics, from the Nigerian Association of Nephrology indicated that 25million of Nigerians are living with Kidney Diseases and the cost of kidney transplant exceed N6.5m which cannot be afforded by an average Nigeria man.
“There is need to expand insurance that will cover this treatment by extending the National Health Insurance Scheme in other states in Nigeria and act wisely to tackle the high rate of this Kidney disease by providing more extensive treatment facilities, extending insurance coverage, creating awareness and endorsing steps to prevent infection. The NHIS is certain to boost the quality of life of people with this chronic Kidney disease,” stated the lawmaker.
