A Nigerian, Dr Chimezie Okwuonu who is also the immediate past chairman of the Abia states’ chapter of Nigerian Medical Association has emerged as one of the two Africans selected for the Emerging Leaders Program by the International Society of Nephrology.
Dr Chimezie who confirmed the news defined it as “a recognition of possibilities that exist in this part of the globe.”
“It also improves capacity for local impact in addressing prevailing health needs of the region”, he said while also saying, “It is a rare opportunity and privilege.”
Dr Okwuonu has played a key role in the series of kidney transplants at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Umuahia and also as a pioneer member of the transplant team, he said only 13 persons from the entire world made the list.
The programme is an initiative of the International Society of Nephrology, to prepare a doctor to play a role in global health care, international collaboration, and implementation research through many programmes including Harvard University sponsored -leadership programmes and participation in international conferences.
While describing the development to boost the health sector in the state, he made it known that there has to be an end to medical tourism abroad through proper research and also provision of quality alternatives to patients.
“This is a big addition to the Abia health system. The training from this program will impart positively to health care in Abia State especially in the area of international collaboration, strengthening health systems and improved kidney care delivery and research. It is indeed an honour for an Abia-born Kidney expert to be so internationally recognized and highlighted.” He said.
