Salisu Ahmed, a 66-year-old Nigerian man, recently shared his experience of living with HIV for 31 years after contracting the virus from his first extramarital affair.
In an interview with reality star Doyin David, Ahmed opened up about the immense challenges he faced, including severe social stigma, being denied access to shared facilities, losing his teaching job, and being abandoned by his wife and children.
Ahmed explained that around 85-90% of people living with HIV contract the virus through sexual intercourse.
Reflecting on his personal journey, he revealed how he was ostracized, saying, “I was denied the use of the bathroom of the compound, I was not allowed to access the toilet, and I was asked honorably to stop coming to school.”
Remarkably, Ahmed was cured of HIV after undergoing a stem cell transplant, a procedure performed at the City of Hope Medical Center in the US.
The center confirmed that Ahmed achieved remission after discontinuing antiretroviral therapy, becoming the fourth person globally, and the oldest, to enter long-term remission from HIV following stem cells received from a donor with a rare genetic mutation.
