Kwara shuts abattoir over poisonous meat sale

Following the sale of poisonous cow meat, Kwara State government has directed a temporary shutdown of the abattoir at Mandate Market in Ilorin, Ilorin West Local Government Area.

The Kwara Monitoring Group(KMG) has called on the attention of the Commissioners for Environment and Health and the Kwara Environmental Protection Agency for immediate action on over 30 cows poisoned had been slaughtered at a site known as Atere road near the College of Arabic and Islamic Studies (CAILS) area in Ilorin and given to butchers for sale to the public.

The Government team arrived the said market to promptly seized all suspicious meats in order to conduct laboratory testing and verify allegations and to ensure safety of the people.

The government praised the leadership of the market for their cooperation, and urge the members of the public to be calm while investigation is ongoing.

Veterinary centres and meat selling point were also advised to follow strict hygiene as well as report any suspicious hawking and selling points of meat for necessary sanctions.

There will be an immediate general cleaning and fumigation of the abattoir to avoid further contamination by the suspected poisoned cow meat as stated by the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Environment, Dr Abubakar Ayinla.
