Ajeromi General Hospital in the Ajegunle Area of Lagos State has held a woman known as Elizabeth Davis who lost her baby after delivering prematurely over failure to pay her medical bill of N323,000.
This was done despite the Governor’s order that all primary health and general hospitals centres are to offer free antenatal care and child delivery services to pregnant woman who are Lagos state residents so as to reduced hardship due to fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government.
Elizabeth has been detained by the hospital management due to her inability to settle her debt since her treatment on February 29, 2024 after she gave birth when the pregnancy was just seven month.
On the 3rd ofMarch, she was told her baby was sick but died before the clock hits 3am.
Since then, she has not been allowed to leave. The husband was also denied the chance to take away the corpse of the infant after she died in the incubator until they offset their outstanding of N323,000.
After a part payment of N50,000 has been made, the husband was called on Monday March 25, 2024 to come and receive the baby’s corpse while his wife is still remains at the hospital.
The state Commissioner of Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi is currently investigating the matter after requesting the hospital details and the patient’s name.
