The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a significant reduction in the cost of kidney dialysis, lowering it from ₦50,000 to ₦12,000 per session.
This subsidy, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aims to make life-saving dialysis treatment more affordable for Nigerians suffering from kidney failure.
Key Details:
- Subsidy Implementation: The initiative is being carried out across 11 federal medical institutions located in Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. These include the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), and the Federal Medical Centres in Abuja, Owerri, and Maiduguri, among others.
- Patient Impact: The subsidy has been welcomed as a relief for patients who previously struggled to afford the high cost of dialysis. However, the initiative faces challenges due to a severe shortage of dialysis machines.
- Machine Shortage: Reports indicate that only 354 functional dialysis machines are available nationwide, serving approximately 230,000 patients in need of regular treatment. This shortage highlights the need for further investment in healthcare infrastructure.
While the subsidy is a step in the right direction, experts emphasize the importance of addressing the critical shortage of dialysis machines to ensure the program’s success.
