Despite the acceptance and growing use of medicinal herbs during pregnancy, experts have warned against consuming herbal medicine, including almond fruit leaves during pregnancy particularly in the third trimester or during labour.
It is used in the treatment of hypertension, cough, diabetes, jaundice and indigestion while the bark is used to treat diarrhoea, dysentery and abscesses. The almond fruit tree leave is also called Terminalia catappa.
The aqueous leaf extract of Almond fruit trees is relatively safe for pregnant rats in a recent study. Although it is not harmful to the unborn baby but it may slow or stop the contractions of the woman’s womb during pregnancy.
Using medicinal plants while pregnant carries a number of possible risk such as miscarriage, early birth, contractions in the womb or harm to the unborn child because of their components.
Research indicates that during pregnancy, exposure to medicinal herbs may account for as little as 1% of birth abnormalities observed at delivery; yet, this percentage is significantly greater than that of women who took pharmaceutical products.
