The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a recall for Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap (100g), batch number 81832M 08, produced in Germany, due to the presence of Butylphenyl Methylpropional (BMHCA), also known as Lilial, a chemical impurity linked to reproductive harm and skin sensitization.
In a statement released on Monday, NAFDAC explained that BMHCA is banned in cosmetic products under the Cosmetic Products Regulation due to its potential to harm the reproductive system and affect unborn children, as well as trigger allergic reactions.
Regulatory authorities in the European Union have already banned the marketing of products containing this chemical.
The recall includes several other Dove products, such as Derma Spa Goodness, Men Care, and others, which have also been banned in different countries.
NAFDAC urged the public to be vigilant and to avoid the importation, sale, or use of the recalled products, as they are not listed in the agency’s database.
NAFDAC also reminded importers that the importation of soaps is prohibited in Nigeria and requested that individuals discontinue the use of the affected products and submit any stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.
Health professionals and consumers were encouraged to report any adverse reactions experienced with regulated products via NAFDAC’s reporting platforms.
