South African singer Tyla made a remarkable impression at the 30th MTV Europe Music Awards in Manchester, UK, on Sunday, winning three prestigious awards. She outperformed Nigerian stars Asake, Tems, Rema, Burna Boy, and Ayra Starr to claim the Best Afrobeats Artist title.
Tyla also secured the Best African Act award, triumphing over Ayra Starr, Asake, DBN Gogo, TitoM & Yuppe, and Diamond Platnumz.
Her third award for the night was Best R&B Artist, where she bested American superstars Kehlani, SZA, Tinashe, Usher, and Victoria Monét.
She ended the night on a high note with an acoustic performance of her hit song “Water.”
Meanwhile, Nigerian songstress Ayra Starr, who had four nominations, did not win any awards in the categories of Best African Act, Best New Artist, Best Afrobeats Artist, and Best Push.
Earlier this year, Tyla also achieved significant victories, including the Best African Music Performance category at the Grammys and the Best Afrobeats Artist category at the 2024 MTV Music Video Awards, where she outperformed Nigerian artists.
