Nigerian rapper Speed Darlington has taken legal action against Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, alleging unlawful detention.
Darlington’s arrest and detention stemmed from comments he made about singer Burna Boy, leading to accusations of defamation and cyberstalking.
Despite being granted bail by the Federal High Court in Abuja on December 23, 2024, Darlington remained in police custody. His lawyer claimed in a social media video that Burna Boy had bribed the police to continue detaining him.
On January 6, 2025, the court ordered Darlington’s release. Following the court’s mandate, Darlington promptly filed a ₦300 million lawsuit against the IGP, citing violations of his rights.
The Federal High Court in Abuja has set a hearing for January 13 to address Darlington’s fundamental rights enforcement suit against the police. The court agreed to an adjournment requested by Darlington’s lawyer, Abubakar Marshal, to allow police lawyer Garba Audu time to review and respond to the suit.
