A Nigerian civil servant is facing deep regret after incurring a ₦2.3 million debt due to a lavish wedding influenced by his wife’s desire for a grand celebration.
According to a post by X user @rukky_nate, the man spent ₦6 million on the wedding but only managed to recoup ₦350,000 from cash gifts during the event.
The post detailed the man’s financial struggles, revealing that he borrowed ₦2.3 million from his workplace’s cooperative society to cover the expenses. He wrote:
“My neighbor’s brother, a civil servant, got married over the weekend. He spent ₦6 million in expenses and was only able to realize ₦350,000 from the total money sprayed. He said his wife wanted a loud wedding, and he agreed. Now he is regretting that decision. I don’t feel sorry for him.”
In another update, he added:
“Update: He borrowed ₦2.3 million from his workplace cooperative society. This is stupidity. I feel like punching this guy in the face.”
The post sparked mixed reactions online. While some criticized the man for prioritizing a “loud wedding” over financial prudence, others pointed out the pressures of societal expectations and family influence in such decisions.
This incident has reignited discussions about the rising costs of weddings in Nigeria and the need for couples to prioritize financial stability over fleeting grandeur.
