Founded by Peace Anyiam-Osigwe in 2005, the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) aim to promote and celebrate excellence in African filmmaking under the Africa Film Academy.

Recognized as the premier accolade in African cinema, the AMAAs have grown beyond an annual televised event into a year-round platform that highlights the achievements of industry professionals across the continent.

The inaugural ceremony took place in 2005 in Yenagoa, Nigeria, establishing a tradition of predominantly hosting in the city.

However, in 2015, the awards expanded internationally with the first event held outside Nigeria, marking a new era for the celebration of African cinema on the global stage.
