The Coroner’s inquest into the death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad, has granted permission to his family for an independent autopsy and toxicology test on his body. Presided over by Magistrate T.A. Sonubi, the court approved the family’s request, filed by their lawyers.
The application sought authorization for a licensed pathologist to conduct a thorough independent autopsy on Mohbad’s body, currently at the Military Hospital in Yaba, Lagos State. It also requested permission to collect additional samples for independent evaluation, including skin, urine, blood, and other fluids obtained during the initial autopsy conducted by the Chief Medical Examiner of Lagos State.
The Aloba family pursued the second autopsy due to suspicions surrounding Mohbad’s death on September 12, 2023. They hope the independent tests will provide clarity and a second opinion on the circumstances of his passing.
Magistrate Sonubi, while granting the order for the independent autopsy and toxicology tests on Mohbad, specified that all costs associated with these procedures would be covered by the Aloba family. Additionally, he mandated that Mohbad’s father, mother, and wife must be present during the autopsy.
Previously, the government-conducted autopsy and toxicology tests, presented by Prof. Soyemi of the Lagos State Teaching Hospital, were inconclusive.
The Aloba family’s legal team, headed by Mr. Wahab Shittu and Taiwo Odumosu, had previously rejected the results of the government-conducted autopsy and toxicology tests, advocating instead for an independent toxicology examination.
Regarding procedural matters, the court did not grant the application to recall witnesses who had already testified. However, it approved the application to call new witnesses, contingent upon the family providing detailed information for issuing witness summonses.
In response to Wunmi Aloba’s request to bury the late singer, the legal team conditioned this upon the timing of the independent autopsy and toxicology tests.
