Before the end of 2024, House of Ga’a, a historical drama about the life of the notorious Bashorun Ga’a, will be available to view on Netflix.
The revelation was made on March 6, 2024, a Wednesday, during an International Women’s Day celebration hosted by the giant of streaming services to honor notable female actors, directors, producers, and other members of the Nigerian film industry.
Bolanle Austen-Peters, the director of Man of God, an award-winning film that debuted on Netflix in 2022, also helms House of Ga’a. The biopic is set in the 18th century when the actual Bashorun Ga’a rose to such power that he both crowned and dethroned kings for sport.
Femi Branch, Ibrahim Chatta, Mike Afolarin, Funke Akindele, Toyin Abraham, Dele Odule, Bimbo Manuel, Lateef Adedimeji, and Femi Adebayo are among the cast members. The others are Gbenga Titiloye, Willam Benson, Gabriel Afolayan, Jide ‘JBlaze’ Oyegbile, Seun Akindele, Yemi Blaq, Adeniyi Johnson, Muyiwa Ademola, and Kunle Coker.
Although the film’s release date is currently uncertain, Austen-Peters first hinted at the project when he started the project production in May 2023. “Back on SET! Something special is brewing! Thank God,” she tweeted” she tweeted.
At the ‘Her Voice, Our Story’ event on Wednesday, Netflix’s Director of Content in Sub-Saharan Africa, Dorothy Ghettuba, expressed that the streaming behemoth is enthusiastic about narrating significant stories.
“We are happy to work with the female powerhouse in the creative industry and bring to life the awesome projects that reflect their stories and promote our culture,” she stated.
Òlòtūré: The Journey, a film by Mo Abudu, and Baby Farm, a TV series; Postcards, a TV series by Hamisha Daryani Ahuja; and To Kill a Monkey, a TV series by Kemi Adetiba are among the other female-led Netflix original productions anticipated this year.
