Awujale, The Biopic, to premiere April

Ọba Síkírù Adétọ̀nà, Ọ̀gbágbá II, the Awùjalẹ̀ of Ìjẹ̀búland

Awujale, the Biopic, a movie produded by Seun Oloketuyi of Ultimate Communications to tell the story of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Ọba Sikiru Adetona, Ogbagba II, is set for premiere this month.

This was announced by Oloketuyi, the biopic’s producer.

Produced by Seun Oloketuyi and directed by Tunde Olaoye, the movie also features Sola Sobowale, Aisha Lawal, Dayo Amusan, Nifemi Lawal, Yemi Sodimu, amongst others.

The trailer was earlier released to mark the 64 years coronation anniversary of the reverred Monarch a week ago.

The trailer shows a defiant and focused Awujale telling the military that he doesn’t need permission from anyone before he can travel out of the country. From the trailer, the movie will mostly be about the monarch’s struggles before his enthronement and during his reign.

Oloketuyi, in his words, said he got the idea for the movie from a Fuji musician, who we are guessing to be the Legendary Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM1 due to his close ties to the Monarch, being a descendant of one of the past Awujales and the fact that he hails from Ijebu-Ode.

Oloketuyi said the Fuji Musician advised him to read books about the monarch, one of which got him hooked and inspired him to create this film.

The young Prince Adetona who is from the Anikinaiya Ruling House got an invitation to contest for the post after the passing of his predecessor, Oba Daniel Gbelegbuwa, in January 1959.

At the period, the Prince was heading for a career in the United Kingdom, but was eligible to be the King as he was born during the reign of his predecessor, a criterion amongst others that must be met.

A number of contenders surfaced for consideration, but the field was reduced by the Anikilaiya Ruling House‘s turn. There were only two Abidagbas left, Prince Rufai Adetona, the father of Sikiru Kayode Adetona, being one of the competitors.

Prince Adetona, however, heeded the call and returned to his roots to assume the mantle of leadership.

He became the Awujales on April 2, 1960, few months to Nigeria’s independence from Britain.

The exact date for the movie’s premiere in April has not been made known, but the producer has promised Nigerians to be on the lookout for the announcement.
