The 20th edition of the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), which honors and showcases accomplishments in the African film industry, is now taking submissions.

In a news release, AFA board member and designated chair Raymond Anyiam-Osigwe stated that the event this year would honor the late founder Peace Anyiam-Osigwe as well as the contributions the academy has made to the African film industry since its founding.

“This is a way to formally close the 19th AMAA Awards, which are run by the Africa Film Academy, and start the AMAA 2024 adventure. In addition to celebrating and toasting the founder, Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, of blessed memory, and her role in bringing African cinema and filmmakers to the world’s attention, the 20th edition of the AMAA will stand as a testament to African creativity, he said. It also marks the culmination of 20 years of the AMAA, which features the best in African cinematography and film.

The formal call for submissions, which encourages filmmakers to submit their feature-length, short, animated, and documentary work for consideration in the almost thirty film categories of the awards, was also released by the organizers.

The necessity of submitting work that features Africans and people of African origin was emphasized by Shaibu Husseni, the current DG of the Nigeria Film and Video Censor Board, who is back for the 20th edition as the head of AMAA’s College of Screeners.

“We look forward to getting great films from African filmmakers,” the speaker said. Submissions in AMAA categories (documentaries, animations, feature films, and more) are eagerly anticipated. I want to stress once more that a film’s country of origin is not the same as its country of origin. We don’t support movies that don’t feature African actors or directors. You can post movies to the “Film Freeway.”

The 20th edition of AMAA is going to be huge, Anyiam-Osigwe added. He went on to say that Lagos is the host state and that Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor, will return to serve as host for the AMAAs’ 20th anniversary. Additional events would be jury sessions, nomination announcements, and AFA-sponsored human capacity development.
