A sum of ₦12 million seed research grants has been awarded to twelve student groups by the Africa Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Power and Energy Development (ACE-SPED), University of Nigeria.
The research groups were given a ₦1 million each to demonstrate innovative and entrepreneurial ideas within a period of six months.
Some of the projects selected for funding are “the development of a hydro-thermal generator pressure varying (HTPV-G) system, the mass production and distribution of a hand-held watermelon ripeness detector to aid Nigerian farmers, the creation of both fixed mobile solar power stations tailored for shops and events, the design of portable solar generators and the production of bioethanol from agro-waste.”
Over 30 applications were received from different research groups but 12 were fit for the process.
This purpose of these grants is to address societal needs while promoting the student potentials, University of Nigeria and engage industrial partners to help the ideas commercialized, according to Professor Emenike Ejiogu, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Nigeria.
He urged the government and private sector stakeholders to take investment in research a priority within the higher level due to their diverse role in developing Nigeria economy.
ACE-SPED currently offers Master’s and Doctoral degrees in eight NUC-accredited programmes which involves practical research aimed at providing solutions to power and energy in the sub-Saharan Africa.
