Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, and the Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, will get half of their withheld salaries, according to the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman who said that’ll happen once President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approves the payment of their salary arrears.
He was speaking as a guest on Channels Televisions Politics Today on Wednesday.
The Minister claimed the strike of the non-academic staff members of universities wasn’t in tandem with their academic counterparts, and the government has been playing its part in bringing succour to them.
Speaking on the delay in getting salaries to members of both unions, he said, “No, it has not been approved.
“There is a court judgement on no work, no pay. ASUU getting four months’ pay was actually a discretion and decision on the part of the President. So, it doesn’t automatically transfer (to NASU and SSANU) but the matter is under consideration.
“I don’t think it is safe to put a time on it but it’s safer to say that we are on it and we are pushing.
The Minister also dismissed the notion of discrimination by NASU and SSANU, he said, “That cannot be right, there is no rating. These are people working in the same terrain, they are doing different things but all working towards the same goal.
Days later, in the month of March, a meeting was held with the representatives of the Federal Government but an agreement couldn’t be reached.
However, the seven-day warning strike ended at midnight on Sunday, 24th March 2024 and normal work resumed on Monday, 25th March 2024 following the directive of SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim which was contained in a circular sent to branch chairmen at public universities all across Nigeria.
