Protests: UI Management meets Students

The management of the University of Ibadan in Oyo State met with students on Wednesday following a series of protests against a 10-hour daily electricity supply on campus.

Led by Students’ Union President Bolaji Aweda, the students voiced their grievances, which included the rationing of electricity, fee hikes, the compulsory sale of handouts and GES textbooks, poor welfare conditions, inadequate attention at the university health services, victimization of students who previously protested fee hikes, and inadequate campus security.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Peter Olapegba represented the management during the meeting. He explained that the new electricity policy was due to the high monthly bills from the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

He assured the students that the management would address their concerns within the limits of available resources.
