The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, has pleaded with the federal government to reconsider the Oronsaye Report’s recommendation to combine the Nigerian Army University in Biu, Borno State, with the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna.
On Thursday, February 29, Zulum said to reporters in Maiduguri, We are all aware that Boko Haram’s primary mission is to truncate western education. “Collapsing the Army University as a Faculty within the NDA is like helping the insurgents to achieve their objectives.”
We still want to appeal to the President to allow the Federal Ministry of Education to take it over to become a conventional university, “If this cannot be possible, I am appealing to Mr. President to look into this issue so that the Army University, Biu will remain autonomous.”
“As education is more important than ever for Borno State and the North-East,” citing the state’s 15-year serious crisis as the reason why many of their children were unable to obtain an education.
On Monday, the Federal Government finally approved the implementation of some of the suggestions made in the Stephen Oronsaye Report to reduce the cost of governance, after the report had been in effect for twelve years.
The Nigerian Defence Academy should add the Air Force Institute of Technology as a faculty member as well.
