The National Universities Commission (NUC) has issued a warning to Nigerian universities not to collect fees in US dollars. It states that no university functioning in the nation, whether private or public, is permitted to do so.
He clarified that certain universities accused of charging fees in dollars were simply charging foreign students because the dollar is the only universally recognized form of payment acceptable to international students.
Maiyaki clarified further by saying that any foreign student wishing to study in Nigeria would need to pay their tuition in US dollars.
He said, “Nigerian universities are not permitted. It is actually illegal for any Nigerian company to charge in dollars according to Nigerian law. The organization doesn’t take payments in US currencies. Visit the organization’s website to observe how plain it is. They have declared that they exclusively take payments in US dollars from overseas students.
“If you decide to travel in the other direction and go to Ghana, a Nigerian student will be charged in dollars by Ghana, in dollars by Uganda, and in dollars by Kenya. Regarding our institutions, the legislation appropriately directs them not to collect payments in dollars.
The head of the NUC, who denounced degree mills being pursued by certain people, revealed that certain prosecutions had been obtained and those convicted were presently serving prison sentences.
The head of NUC disclosed that a unit cost analysis has been created to show how much it would cost to train a person in a certain discipline at institutions that operate in the nation, in addition to revealing that a database of full professors in Nigeria has been created to facilitate referrals.
With the assistance of experts, the National University Commission created a unit cost analysis that estimates the cost of training a Nigerian graduate. We have sent this information to the government, and I’m confident that it will be a valuable tool in supporting the government with the recently established Nigerian educational loan.
