NUC Approves 2 New Private Uni, Tally Hits 149

National Universities Commission

Two new universities will be established with approval from the federal government, increasing the overall number of universities in the nation to 274 and the number of private universities to 149.

Lighthouse University in Evbuobanosa, Edo State, and the African School of Economics in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja are the two universities in question.

The two institutions were approved by President Bola Tinubu during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on December 13, 2023, according to Minister of Education Prof. Tahir Mamman, who spoke at the awarding of provisional licenses to the two universities on Thursday in Abuja.

Mamman ordered university owners to gather courses on entrepreneurship and skills, which align with the current government’s ideology.

Three years after the probation, he warned, the institutions would only receive a substantive license if they satisfied the conditions of quality assurance.

Therefore, he issued a warning, saying that if they didn’t complete all the requirements, their provisional licenses might be revoked after three years of probation.

“As you are probably aware, Nigeria currently has the largest economy in Africa with great potential. The country’s population is forecasted to increase up to four hundred million by the year 2050.

“This should therefore evoke a sense of urgency in preparation to cater for the needs of this anticipated population.
