Nigerian Universities Staff threaten Indefinite Strike

The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike if the Federal Government does not pay their outstanding salaries within three weeks.

The unions are demanding the payment of four months’ withheld salaries, improved remuneration, earned allowances, and the implementation of the 2009 agreements with the government.

The ultimatum follows a failed promise by the government to address these issues, with an initial grace period expiring on 26th July 2024. Despite President Bola Tinubu’s approval for the payment on 18th July 2024, no action has been taken.

SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi emphasized that, if the situation remains unresolved by Tuesday, 17th September 2024, the unions will proceed with an indefinite strike, potentially shutting down universities and inter-university centers across the country.
