Nigerian Doctor Emerge Best in London University

The winner of the best overall performance award in the School of Health & Psychological Sciences at City, University of London is Douye Nomayo, a Nigerian physician. There are students from more than 40 different post-graduate programs at the City, University of London’s School of Health & Psychological Sciences.

According to a graduation ceremony brochure, Nomayo, a native of Bayelsa State, won the award after earning a master’s degree in health policy with honors from the City University of London in January 2024.

Nomayo claimed to have spent nine years working at the Federal Medical Center in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, before to moving to the UK. Looking back on her accomplishment, she said that her enthusiasm in public service led her to choose to seek a second degree in health policy.

“I saw the suffering people went through to get healthcare because it was expensive or unavailable when I worked in the hospital.” I came to see that in order to swiftly bring issues pertaining to the health sector to the political table, healthcare professionals needed to become more involved in politics. I set out to study how to create, assess, and enhance current policies as well as the financial and political facets of healthcare policymaking.

“We can use the experiences of other countries that have implemented health system reforms to create changes that will be both financially viable and well-received by the Nigerian public and healthcare providers.”

Speaking about the difficulties she encountered while pursuing her master’s degree at the City University of London, Nomayo stated, “I had to juggle studying with other endeavors, like taking care of my young children, so the past year was really tough for me.” I had a lot of crying days and restless nights, but with God’s assistance, I made it through.

“I’m delighted to be among the numerous Nigerians who enhance the reputation of our wonderful nation. We are a highly strong people who keep going even when things get difficult. Even if we cry, we don’t stop until we accomplish our objective.
“In the future, I want to use my knowledge and abilities to support my country and increase healthcare accessibility for everyone.”
