Literary Nobel laureate, Prof. Akinwande Oluwole ‘Wole’ Babatunde Soyinka, will be honored on 2024 World Book and Copyright Day by the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC).
This was revealed by Dr. John Asein, Director General of NCC, in a statement honoring this year’s World Book and Copyright Day, which is observed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to focus on books, honor authors, encourage reading, support non-discriminatory access to knowledge, and increase awareness of copyright.
The Commission is happy to honor Soyinka with this year’s World Book and Copyright Day, as his works will be shown as part of the festivities around the nation as the tallest living Iroko in Nigeria’s rich literary forest and an advocate for books, reading, and copyright.
All stakeholders in the book industry will recognize July 13 as Nigeria’s National Reading Day to encourage Nigerians to read for pleasure and draw attention to some of the values that he has advanced in the literary world. The theme for the year’s celebration is “Read Your Way.”
In order to increase children’s exposure to literature, copies of his books will made available to ninety (90) public schools to have access to them. These schools should take advantage of this chance to expand their Copyright and Creativity Clubs and foster a culture of respect for copyright.
Asein further urged all authors, publishers, book clubs and corporate Nigerians to get involved in book- related activities as part of their social responsibility. He lauded those taking part in the ongoing Soyinka Reading Challenge and other internet activities to promote the reading fun.
He also express gratitude to those who have shown interest in copyright awareness initiatives, school reading competitions, book donations, and reading activities for kids and adults with special needs.
