Lagos approves Yorùbá for testing admission seekers

The Lagos State Government has officially approved the inclusion of Yoruba Language as a subject for testing pupils’ knowledge and thinking ability in the Year 2025 Placement Test by Continuous Assessment Scores (CAS).

This decision was announced by Mr. Abayomi Abolaji, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the ministry’s conference room in Alausa, Lagos.

According to Abolaji, the study of Yoruba Language has already been integrated into the state’s educational curriculum.

The 2025 placement test for primary six pupils transitioning to public junior secondary schools will assess their proficiency in Yoruba, alongside other subjects.

This new policy, born from a consensus reached among several educational bodies, aims to promote the teaching and learning of Yoruba as an indigenous language. Abolaji emphasized the importance of this policy in preserving the culture and identity of the people of Lagos.

Stakeholders involved in the decision-making process include the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), and several educational organizations.

They acknowledged UNESCO’s policy of using a child’s native language as a medium of instruction until primary three, aiming to strengthen language learning.

For the 2025 Placement Test by CAS, pupils will be evaluated in Mathematics (including Quantitative Reasoning and Primary Science) and Language (including English Studies, Yoruba Language, Verbal Reasoning, and General Paper).
