Kwara State has finally paid up the entire sum of around N3 billion in wage arrears owed to teachers, the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), and local government employees by the former governor Abdulfatah Ahmed’s administration.
The local government committed N1,297,389,165.83 to pay the remaining arrears owed to the SUBEB teachers, according to figures from the most recent allocation meeting, in a statement released by the press secretary, Babatunde Toyin Abdulrasheed.
An additional N1,622,673,992.12 was allotted to settle the remaining arrears for the local government employees under the previous administration.
It was further stated that paying its multibillion naira monthly obligations to these workers and numerous others since it was elected in 2019, the administration has spent at least N5.5 billion between January 2020 and January 2024 to offset the salary arrears for SUBEB teachers, local government employees, and local government pensioners alone.
The announcement claims that the execution of 2022 promotion for SUBEB teaching and non-teaching staff has received government approval for cash-backing.
Stating that the ongoing protests for the money’s payment, which spanned 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019, had come to an end with the ultimate settlement of the SUBEB and local government salary arrears.
