The Ministry of Education clarified that the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has only proposed the introduction of a 12-year basic education system.
This clarification comes after reports suggested that the Junior and Senior Secondary School (JSS and SSS) system was being eliminated.
According to the ministry, they are still discussing this proposal and have not scheduled it for immediate implementation.
The proposed plan aims to transition to a 12-year compulsory education system within the existing 6-3-3 framework, removing the examination barrier between JSS and SSS.
The ministry plans to engage in extensive consultations with stakeholders over the next eight months before making a final decision at the National Council on Education meeting in October 2025.
