Minister of Education, Dr. Morufu Olatunji Alausa, has reversed the controversial policy set by his predecessor, Professor Tahir Mamman, which set the university admission age at 18.

During a briefing on Tuesday, Alausa stated that the policy hindered efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children and was unsustainable for the education sector.

He announced that the 16-year age limit would be reinstated, with exceptions for “gifted children.”

Alausa also revealed plans to shift Nigeria’s education system to 80% practical and 20% theoretical learning. He believes this approach will help address unemployment by ensuring graduates have practical skills. The federal government will collaborate with the private sector to train students and unlock their potential.

Alausa, who was previously the Minister of State for Health, assumed his new role following a recent cabinet reshuffle that saw the exit of his predecessor.
