The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has placed its members on strike alert following the arrest of Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), by the Department of State Security (DSS).
Acting General Secretary Igwebike Dominic made the announcement in a statement on Monday, calling for Ajaero’s immediate and unconditional release. The arrest has raised concerns of a potential shutdown of the national grid as NUEE members prepare for possible industrial action.
In response to Ajaero’s detention, the union expressed strong disapproval, stating, “Nigeria is our collective country; our leaders should not make us live like slaves that cannot express themselves in our country.”
The NUEE emphasized that harm should not come to Ajaero and urged all members to remain on standby for further directives.
