The Nigerian police have issued a strict warning to Point of Sale (POS) operators against handling transactions over ₦500,000, citing the risk of being implicated in criminal activities such as kidnapping.
This warning was issued by the Delta state’s police spokesman, SP Bright Edafe, who recounted an incident where a POS operator processed a ₦4,000,000 ransom payment, profiting only ₦40,000.
“Don’t be a tool for kidnappers to collect ransom. It must be traced to you.
“My message to POS operators, transactions above 500k can get you into trouble. Don’t be a tool for kidnappers to collect ransom. It must be traced to you. She received N4,000,000 ransom from kidnappers and her profit was just N40,000,” he stated.
Edafe urged operators to remain vigilant, avoid large transactions, and report suspicious activities to prevent legal issues, warning that such involvement could lead to prison time.
