President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has flagged-off the commercial operation of Abuja Light Rail.
The launch was one of the events organized by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, to celebrate President Tinubu’s first year in office.
President Bola Tinubu, at the commissioning, declared that the Abuja Rail Mass Transit, also known as Metro Line, will offer free rides till the end of the year.
“Our dear landlord and his team, I heard you saying two months free ride. I appeal to you to make it till the end of the year free ride, since today you are not going to charge me. Let me give the people hope and reason to celebrate,” he stated.
“Today, what we have in the FCT is another piece of evidence that we are a government that delivers on promises. I observe keenly other milestones that this administration has achieved especially in the areas of social services and other public utilities.”
On May 23, Wike announced that the facility would provide Nigerians with a two-month free ride.
The rail system, developed in six phases, was funded by loans from the China EXIM Bank.
Though it was inaugurated by former President Muhammadu Buhari on July 12, 2018, it soon shut down due to vandalism.
Earlier, the President launched the former National Anthem that was passed on Tuesday by the Senate.
Addressing the joint session, President Tinubu said “This institution, the hallowed chamber, represents our consciousness from freedom and sense of belonging. You sang out the latest national anthem Nigeria we hail thee.
“This is our diversity, representing all cradles and how we play together to be brothers and sisters. Without this house, probably I may not have found the path to the presidency I started before now and that is why I am giving all the respect to you to please continue to collaborate, work together and build our country, we have no other choice it is our country.
President Bola Tinubu went on to praise all Nigerians for maintaining 25 years of uninterrupted democracy and encouraged them to keep cooperating and working together.
