Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has clarified that President Bola Tinubu was not responsible for the removal of the petroleum subsidy, despite his pronouncement that “subsidy is gone.”
Speaking on Friday during an interview on Channels TV, Dogara explained that the subsidy removal was already in place before Tinubu’s election, as there was no budget allocation for it approved by the National Assembly.
Dogara acknowledged that while Nigerians are feeling the effects of the subsidy removal, it was a necessary step for the country’s progress.
He emphasized the need for discussions focused on solutions rather than just highlighting problems, particularly among the elites.
He further noted that without a budget provision for the subsidy, there was no basis for continuing its payment, reinforcing that the decision had been made before Tinubu assumed office.
