President Bola Tinubu has appointed Mr. Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as the Director-General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership, following agreements reached during the President’s visit to China in early September.
The announcement was made by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Adviser on Information and Strategy.
Tegbe, a 1988 first-class civil engineering graduate from Obafemi Awolowo University and a fellow of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, will report directly to the President.
He is tasked with submitting a strategic action plan to ensure Nigeria benefits from the agreements with China, which focus on various sectors, including infrastructure, technology transfer, and economic diversification.
As the head of the strategic partnership, Tegbe will manage day-to-day operations, engage with Chinese counterparts, and ensure that project deliverables align with Nigeria’s national development goals.
His strategic plan will include key performance indicators, timelines, and priority projects across areas such as rail network expansion, power distribution upgrades, and industrial park creation.
This partnership follows President Xi Jinping’s pledge of 360 billion yuan ($51 billion) in financing to African nations during the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). Both countries have committed to collaborative projects in healthcare, education, agriculture, and infrastructure.
Tegbe, who brings 35 years of experience in business strategy, including a senior role at KPMG Africa, will be crucial in overseeing the execution of these agreements.
